Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to highlight the inclusion and significance of cross-subject investigations and the multi disciplinary approach of Fine Art within the topic of ‘Black & White’. This is a fascinating subject that has been interpreted in many innovative ways over many years in the history of art and is still just as firmly established in art today.
We will investigate how broad the subject of Black & White is; look at artists’ interpretation and application of it. We will exam how it has been used as a formal element and explore the qualities and limitations of wide variety of conventional and unconventional materials and techniques that Black & White lends itself to.
In addition we will explore the way an artist might respond to the theme ‘Black & White’ in a way that addresses different social and cultural attitudes and political, historical and religious ideologies or how amongst other things it can be explored via mathematical and scientific theories that experiment with retinal illusions and perceptual psychology.
This body of research will develop your own understanding of the potential of ‘Black & White’ and enable you to generate your own research and ideas to form a creative final outcome.
